Barlovento Algarve

The Moors dubbed Portugal’s south-western tip “Al Gharb”, which roughly translates as ‘land in the west’. Dramatic steep coastlines with bizarre rock formations and a mild climate, even in winter, draw thousands of tourists to the Algarve every year. Hence peace and solitude can only be found out of season – and then, if anywhere, only on the west coast between Odeceixe and the imposing Cabo San Vicente. Even the little fishing village of Sagres – a popular base, especially among surfers – rates as a standalone destination! The southern resorts of Praia da Rocha, Vilamoura and Faro feel altogether different with hotel complexes and golf courses: definitely the preserve of package tourists and lively party people.

This coastline has a split personality when it comes to windsurfing and kiting too. In the Barlovento Algarve (‘windward Algarve’) west of Faro, the Atlantic influence is still obvious as Nortada regularly ventilates the area between Sagres and Portimão in summer. It blows cross-on at Tonel (know as “Little Guincho” by locals), sometimes turning it into an impressive big-wave spot. The south-facing beaches of Sagres and Lagos are a freestyle paradise in offshore Nortada. But while the beach offers bikini temperatures, the water stays relatively fresh even in summer – if you want to hit the water in boardshorts, try further east.
