Calvados
The Cotentin Peninsula forms the core of the region of Calvados. Between Le Havre and the Cotentin lies the land of the famous applejack brandy, Camembert cheese and “Débarquement” (the French name for the Allied landings, to which beaches like Sword, Omaha and Utah bear lasting testament). The fact that the Allied Forces chose this coastline offers certain clues about its characteristics: the spots in the shelter of the Cotentin mostly offer moderate conditions on expansive sandy beaches.
