Scotland West Coast

The jagged, fjord-like Scotland West Coast extends into the Atlantic way north beyond Ireland, and conditions deliver what a glance at the map promises: strong winds, huge swells and hearty temperatures in a far-flung country of breathtaking character and beauty. While many native kiters and windsurfers prefer some company on the relatively protected waters of the Firth of Clyde near Glasgow, wave-junkies are lured from all over Great Britain to the western isles and peninsulas. The main draw is the small Inner Hebridean island of Tiree, a place of pilgrimage where Britain’s top sailors annually fight it out for the UK Wavesailing crown. The journey to the Outer Hebrides seems never-ending, but those who have voyaged to the Isle of Lewis speak of possibly the country’s best location.
