Southern Apulia

Back on the mainland, just before the ‘boot heel’ you’ll reach Apulia – the former bridgehead to the Greek world. Thanks to an especially mild climate, this region has proved ideal for human habitation since prehistoric times. Apulia’s high times were the Middle Ages, still evident in innumerable Romanesque cathedrals and forts. Other than that, people in Apulia like it simple, rustic and free. But Apulia isn’t only culturally interesting – it’s no accident that the Italian manufacturers and magazines test and photograph new gear here every year. Temperatures stay mild into wintertime, the beaches are white and the water’s crystal-clear. Autumnal Scirocco storms are a compelling reason for wind-seekers to visit – top Ionian spots like Porto Cesareo and Le Pietre can go off in almost Hawaiian style. Northerlies are better sailed on the Adriatic side of the ‘heel’; places like Frassanito (Southern Apulia).
